This body of work is comprised of portrait paintings inspired by those of German Renaissance painter Hans Holbein the Younger (c.1497-1543) whose works Wiley recently observed in a large and important exhibition at the Kunstmuseum in Basel, Switzerland. While the subjects of Wiley’s paintings assume the postures of those in Holbein’s portraits, the backgrounds resemble French scenic wallpaper, which was favored by the wealthy upper class in the 1800s.
